As you know, at Anston Greenlands, we’re all really passionate about the environment, including the biodiversity in our school grounds. We are so proud to have been awarded the Eco-Schools Green Flag award with Distinction, which is the highest level possible.

Your Greatest Overall Success:
The Sycamore Gap Sapling ceremony has clearly been your school’s standout success this year, and pupils should feel incredibly proud to have been part of something so special. Being one of only a handful of schools in the whole country chosen for this honour says so much about the school’s commitment to biodiversity, and it was wonderful to see every member of the school community involved. The chance for pupils to appear on local TV and in newspapers not only celebrated their hard work but also shone a light on the brilliant environmental projects happening in the school, creating a real sense of pride across the whole community. Well done!
We Also Loved:
Well done to the pupils in Year 5 and 6 who made an impressive curriculum link through their whole-school biodiversity project, especially with their ‘How to Save the World’ event for the local community. Their board games, films and letters to the MP showed real depth of understanding, and it was brilliant to see the school giving pupils such a strong platform to share their learning. This project has had a huge impact, helping the whole school community see how pupil voice can drive environmental change.
We loved how you explored global citizenship through their chocolate topic, learning about deforestation, Fair Trade and modern slavery. Their decision to write to their MP and raise money to adopt a chimpanzee in each class was a fantastic example of learning leading to meaningful action. This has helped pupils understand how their choices connect to the wider world and strengthened the school’s commitment to responsible global learning.
We were impressed with how your year 1 and 2 pupils made a lovely link through their ‘The Retreat’ topic, learning how to stay healthy both physically and mentally. Their final Wellness Retreat, complete with yoga and meditation, showed how confidently they could apply what they had learned. This gentle, thoughtful approach has supported pupils’ wellbeing and added a positive dimension to the school’s eco and healthy living work
Your team has done a fantastic job involving the wider community in its eco-journey, especially through the work of Team Green. Pupils speaking confidently on Look North and during the Sycamore Gap event showed just how passionate they are, and it was brilliant to see them addressing the whole school, parents, the press and even local dignitaries. With their work also appearing in the Rotherham Advertiser and in school newsletters, pupils have really helped raise the profile of the school’s environmental efforts. This visibility has strengthened community pride and shown everyone how committed the school is to positive change.
